Etna's prized wine-growing area, from the earliest times, has always been precisely that of the hillside area of Mascali, among the first lands to be planted with vines by the Chalcidian Greeks who landed in Naxos, where they founded the first Greek colony in Sicily in 734 B.C.
The settlers immediately extended their agriculture to the fertile plains and hills of Mascalese, preferring the heights for the cultivation of vines and olives, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds in Nunziata.
A culture that was destined to be continued by the various dominations, beginning with the Romans and continuing through the centuries, through the Middle Ages to the present day.
